Polling & Text Messaging

Polling

Polleverywhere | http://www.polleverywhere.com/

Text the Mob | http://textthemob.com/

Polltogo | http://polltogo.com

Regarding how the credits work: Above a free threshold, it's pay-as-you-go using a credit system.

      • All polls are given a complimentary 20 free credits (1 credit = 1 vote)
      • If someone is expecting more voters for a poll (e.g. you have a class of 100), the user would assign 80 credits to the poll. Of course, to be able to do this the user must have credits in their account (they can be purchased under "Account management").
      • Credits are quite cheap: 200 for every 99 cents with PayPal.
      • Note that any unused vote credits for a poll are refunded after the poll time limit ends (or if the poll is deleted from your account).

SMS Text Messaging

Texting is powerful and pervasive | Infographic | http://viral-notebook.com/blog/2011/10/28/texting-is-powerful-pervasive/

Remind101 | http://remind101.com/ | Free. | Thanks to @jrhode.

Celly | http://cel.ly/

Class Parrot| http://classparrot.com/ | Thanks to @rmbyrne. | http://web20classroom.blogspot.com/2011/10/bring-on-text-messages-with-classparrot.html

The first 500 credits (messages) are free. Every month we'll add another 200 free credits to your account.  You can also get more by inviting your peers to use ClassParrot. We'll give you 200 credits for each person you invite who starts using ClassParrot. We'll also start them off with an extra 200 credits when they accept your invitation.

Google SMS | You can text "Define (word)" to 466453 (which is google) and get definitions back. | Thanks to @kipprogers.

Connecting iPadio to Slideshare for Slidecasting

Tip: Slideshare requires a direct link to an mp3 file (which you can upload) in order to create a slidecast.  The example above was create by downloading an mp3 file created in iPadio and then uploading it to Slideshare.  However, I was able to use the download button at iPadio to capture the direct URL link to the mp3 and use this in Slideshare without having to download-then-upload the mp3 file.  This way the audio file stays in one place on the web the whole time.  Want to know more about how to slidecast, see http://help.slideshare.com/entries/57609-can-you-describe-how-to-create-a-slidecast-step-by-step

My Twitter Story

I have become a firm believer that all faculty members and teachers should be using Twitter—either for professional development or as a teaching tool with students or both.

One tool that I am using is called HootCourse.  It's easy to use and connects easily with Twitter.  In fact, after you set up the tool, you actually don't have to use it for it to work. :)

Tools I've heard good things about

http://twtpoll.com/pricing.php | An easy alternative to polling apps, such as PollDaddy or Polleverywhere.  Does allow embedding in sites.

Building eBooks

Creating eBooks with Sigil

Sigil is an epub editor for creating ebooks.  There is a quick straightforward tutorial available to help you through your first conversion.  This is very doable.  Sigil allows you to convert HTML files into epub format, which is the format for ebooks in iBooks, Nook, and with Adobe Digital Editions.

The process to go through is:

    1. Save a Microsoft Word file as an web page.  If you can, select only visible information when you convert.
    2. Open the HTML file into Sigil.
    3. Do a little clean up inside Sigil.
    4. Save as ... epub format.
    5. You now have to get the epub to your device, and this is done in a lot of different ways.  You can put a link to the file on a web page.  You can copy the file through Dropbox.  You can attach the file through an email.  And for Nook, you would have to sync the file to your Nook device from a computer.

Using Dreamweaver

Another process would be to use Adobe Dreamweaver and CSS to make your eBook as designed as possible.  I recommend using <heading1>, <heading2>, <heading3> tags. Sigil has a function to derive the table of contents (TOC) from your headings.  By doing this it will automatically create the structure of your ebook. You can redefine other tags, such as <table>, <p>, <ol>, and <ul> to take advantage of CSS styling.

Excellent How-to Text

ePub Straight to the Point by Liz Castro | http://www.elizabethcastro.com/epub/

This text does a great job of taking you step-by-step through the process of converting to ePub.  It doesn't use Sigil or Dreamweaver, though. (It does cover coming out of Word and InDesign.)  If you have a good handle on CSS then you can transfer the knowledge in this book quickly to Dreamweaver.  Liz also does a great job of discussing the current limitations of ePub and how to address them, particularly for iBooks.
