3. You need a Google (Gmail) Account.

4. Sign in to Google and Choose Google Reader from the "more" menu in the top left.

4. Adding RSS feeds to your Google Reader.

  • Select the "Add a Subscription" button in the upper right.

  • There are a few different methods to add subscriptions.  First, you can type in the name of the site and let Google search for it.  Very easy.

The results will display in the window to the right.  You can immediately add the subscription with the "Subscribe" button.  You can also select the title of the feed and review some of the posts.  Then, if you like it, you can subscribe.

  • Another method for adding subscriptions is to copy and paste the feed's URL into the "Add a Subscription" box.  On this Web page from the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), there is an RSS feed for news items. When I click on this, it shows me the RSS feed's posts.  It's not very pretty, but I don't care.

I want the URL for the RSS feed at the top in the address bar. Copy the URL by using the key commands (PC: Control + C and Mac: Command + C).

Next, back at Google Reader's "Add a Subscription" box, paste the URL by using the key commands (PC: Control + V and Mac: Command + V).

5. A couple of Advanced tips when you're ready.

  • From your "Home" screen and from the "Browse for Stuff" screen, Google Reader will suggest other blogs and Web sites it feels would be relevant to you.  This is a little like Amazon's recommendations.
  • You can star items for yourself to note and you can share items for other friends.
